What’s Actually Included in the Price of a Dental Implant

Two implant quotes can look thousands of pounds apart and end up costing almost the same. That is not because one practice is greedy and the other is generous. It is because the word “implant” covers several separate things, and different practices bundle them differently.

This guide explains what a complete implant price should cover, what tends to be charged on top, and the questions worth asking before you agree to anything.

An implant is three components, not one

When people say “a dental implant” they usually mean the finished tooth. Clinically it is three parts:

  • The fixture. The titanium post placed into the jawbone. This is the implant proper.
  • The abutment. The connector that joins the fixture to the visible tooth.
  • The crown. The part you see and chew with.

A quote that covers all three is a quote for a finished tooth. A quote that covers only the fixture is a quote for the foundation. Both are legitimate ways to price the work, but they are not comparable, and the difference is substantial. If you take one thing from this article, make it this: ask which of the three your quote includes before you compare it with anyone else’s.

What is often charged separately

Beyond the three components, several things may or may not sit inside the headline figure.

Assessment and imaging

Implant planning needs a three-dimensional view of the jaw, which is what a CBCT scan provides. It shows bone height, bone width and the position of nerves and sinuses. Standard two-dimensional x-rays cannot show those safely. Some practices include the scan, some bill it separately.

Removing the tooth

If the failing tooth is still in place it has to come out first. Sometimes the implant can be placed at the same visit, sometimes the site needs months to heal. That decision is clinical, not commercial, but it affects both the timeline and the bill.

Bone grafting and sinus work

An implant needs enough bone to hold it. Bone shrinks after a tooth is lost, so the longer a gap has been there, the more likely grafting becomes. In the upper back jaw a sinus lift is sometimes needed to create height. Neither is unusual, and neither can be predicted reliably before the scan — which is exactly why a quote given over the phone, before anyone has looked at your jaw, is not a real quote.

Temporary teeth

An implant takes months to integrate with bone. If the gap is visible when you smile, you will want something in it during that period. Ask whether a temporary is included.

Review appointments and aftercare

Implants need monitoring. Ask how many reviews are included, what happens if the crown needs adjusting, and what the position is if something fails.

Why the cheapest quote is often not the cheapest treatment

A low headline figure usually means one of three things: it covers the fixture only, it excludes the scan and any grafting, or it assumes a straightforward case that your case may not be. None of those is dishonest. They just mean the number on the page is a starting point rather than a total.

The useful comparison is not price against price. It is total against total, for the same finished result, with the same things included. Ask every practice for a written breakdown and put them side by side.

Treatment abroad

Overseas implant treatment is genuinely cheaper and many clinics are modern and competent. The trade-off is not usually the surgery, it is the six months afterwards. Implants integrate slowly, crowns occasionally need adjusting, and if something needs attention your surgeon is on a plane. UK practices are often reluctant to take on the follow-up for work they did not plan, and that reluctance is clinical rather than commercial — without the original records, nobody knows what was placed or how.

If you are considering it, ask what happens if there is a problem at month four, and get the answer in writing.

Alternatives worth pricing at the same time

An implant is not the only way to replace a missing tooth, and it is not always the right one. A bridge uses the neighbouring teeth for support, which is quicker and usually less expensive, but it involves preparing healthy teeth either side. A denture is the least invasive and the least expensive, and the least like a natural tooth to live with.

Where several teeth are missing, you do not necessarily need one implant per tooth. All-on-4 and full arch solutions use a small number of implants to support a whole set, which changes the arithmetic considerably. It is worth asking for the alternatives to be priced alongside the implant so you are comparing real options rather than one option against nothing.

Questions to take to your consultation

  • Does this price include the fixture, the abutment and the crown?
  • Is the CBCT scan included, and will I get a copy of it?
  • Is extraction of the existing tooth included?
  • Do you expect I will need a bone graft or sinus lift, and what would that add?
  • Will I have a temporary tooth while it heals?
  • How many review appointments are included?
  • Which implant system are you using, and is it one another UK dentist could work on?
  • What is the position if the implant fails?
  • Can I have all of this in writing before I decide?

That last question matters most. A practice that will not put a plan in writing before treatment is telling you something.

How we handle it at Avenue Dental

We assess before we quote. That means clinical photographs, a scan where implants are being considered, and a look at your gums and bite — because gum health affects how well an implant holds, and an untreated problem elsewhere will undermine the work.

You then get a written plan setting out each stage, the order, the timeline and the cost, with the alternatives priced alongside it. Nothing starts until you have read it and asked whatever you want to ask. If dental anxiety is part of why you have delayed this, say so when you book — we see nervous patients every day and IV sedation is available.

You can read more about dental implants at our Leamington Spa practice, or about the different implant types used in the UK. If you are wondering about the procedure itself, we have covered whether implants hurt separately.

Book a consultation or get in touch and we will give you a straight answer about what your case actually needs.
